Sad News: The Soft Moon's Luis Vasquez Has Passed Away

California musician Luis Vasquez, best known for his work as The Soft Moon, has passed away. The sad news was shared on The Soft Moon's social media accounts this morning, stating, "It is with great sadness that we announce our dear friend, Luis Vasquez has died." The reason for death and Vasquez's age have not been uncovered.

Born in Los Angeles, Vasquez spent part of his upbringing in the relatively remote city of Victorville. His musical journey began in his teenage years, playing in punk bands before making a significant move to the Bay Area. There, he embarked on a solo project under the moniker The Soft Moon, crafting icy, mysterious post-punk with a gothic edge. His self-titled debut album, released in 2010 through Captured Tracks, marked the start of a prolific career.

Vasquez's unique sound quickly gained recognition, and he continued to evolve his craft, releasing albums like 'Zeros' (2012) and 'Deeper' (2015) under Captured Tracks and later collaborating with Sacred Bones Records for two more albums. The most recent, 'Exister,' came out in 2022.

His musical journey took him from Venice to Berlin, and he shared the stage with renowned artists like Depeche Mode and Interpol, solidifying his impact on the music scene. The Soft Moon's Instagram post, announcing Vasquez's passing, is a poignant testament to the impact he had not only as a musician but as a visionary in the industry.

In a tragic update, techno artist John Juan Mendez, known as Silent Servant, and his partner Simone Ling are also believed to have died in the same incident, according to Resident Advisor.

Luis Vasquez leaves behind a legacy of sound that has left an indelible mark on the post-punk and electronic music genres. His contributions will continue to inspire and influence future generations of musicians and music enthusiasts. In his untimely departure, the world has lost a true music visionary.
