"Saturday Night Live" made its 2024 debut on January 20th with host Jacob Elordi and musical guest Reneé Rapp. The anticipation for this episode was evident as NBC started selling merchandise featuring the popular guests well in advance.
During Elordi's opening monologue, he humorously referred to "Saltburn," the film he's currently known for due to its attention-grabbing intimate scenes. Elordi quipped, "You might know me from 'Saltburn.' Not from seeing the film, just from seeing the TikToks." He playfully recounted a scene from the movie involving a grave, jokingly adding, "I was the one in the grave. If you saw the movie, thank you. If you saw it with your parents, I’m sorry. If you saw it with your girlfriend, you’re welcome."
In response to fan questions, when asked about his favorite Elvis, young or old, Elordi amusingly chose "Lilo and Stitch" Elvis, confessing that his familiarity with Elvis was mainly from the 2002 animated film because of his role in "Priscilla."
The monologue took a comedic turn when cast member Sarah Sherman chimed in, expressing her opinion that Elordi's film was "absolutely gross." In a playful banter, she referenced "The Kissing Booth," another project Elordi is known for. Elordi, taking it in stride, acknowledged the peculiar nature of kissing, particularly in the context of his work.
This playful exchange about his Netflix YA franchise comes on the heels of Elordi's previous comments in November, where he criticized the films, saying, "Those movies are ridiculous. They’re not universal. They’re an escape." He questioned the notion of not caring about the quality of content and profiting from people's time, emphasizing the value of audience engagement.
The lighthearted monologue showcased Elordi's ability to humorously navigate his career's diverse projects while engaging with the audience and addressing both the acclaim and criticism surrounding his work.
Apart from Jacob Elordi's notable films like "Saltburn" and "Priscilla," he also shines as one of the lead actors in HBO's "Euphoria," where he plays the character Nate Jacobs. While promoting his "SNL" hosting gig on "The Tonight Show," Elordi shared insights into the status of "Euphoria's" third season, expressing humorous concerns about aging if the filming doesn't commence soon.
"I hope it’s soon, or they’re going to have to Benjamin Button me or something," Elordi joked with host Jimmy Fallon. "I will have a terrible back strolling down the foyer, you know? HBO announced the eagerly awaited third season of "Euphoria" will air in 2025, following the release of the second season in January 2022. Fans of the popular series can look forward to more drama and excitement in the coming years.
The January 20th episode of "Saturday Night Live" also featured Reneé Rapp, who recently launched her album titled "Snow Angel." Rapp, renowned for her role in the successful "Mean Girls" musical movie adaptation as the iconic bully Regina George, made a lighthearted appearance in an early sketch. In a humorous note, she mentioned having to undergo media training after "going off in every interview." Additionally, during her second performance, she was introduced by the original "Mean Girls" star Rachel McAdams and shared the stage with Megan Thee Stallion.
The "SNL" episode provided a platform for Elordi and Rapp to showcase their diverse talents, from Elordi's hosting prowess to Rapp's musical performance and comedic flair. The insights into Elordi's ongoing projects and Rapp's recent endeavors added depth to the episode, making it an entertaining and engaging watch for the audience.
